skos:definition "The 'radioactivity' which, if present in a sample, produces a counting rate
that can be reliably distinguished from 'background' with a certain level of
confidence.
A sample containing exactly the 'minimum significant activity' will, as a result
of random fluctuations, be taken to be free of 'radioactivity' 50% of the time,
whereas a true 'background' sample will be taken to be free of radioactivity
95% of the time.
The 'minimum significant activity' is sometimes referred to as the decision
limit. The counting rate from a sample containing the minimum significant
activity is termed the critical level.
" (en)
