skos:definition "A positively charged particle emitted from the nucleus of some radioactive atoms when they decay. It generally carries more energy than gamma or beta radiation and deposits that energy very quickly while passing through tissue, referred to as "high linear energy transfer" (high LET). Alpha particles cannot penetrate the outer layer of the skin and, therefore, do not cause damage when outside the body. However, they may be particularly damaging if alpha emitters are inhaled or ingested." (en)
